MCDP Applauds 2021 Dream & Promise Act Approval

PHOENIX - On Thursday, the United States House of Representatives approved The Dream & Promise Act of 2021, paving the way for the legalization of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.

The Maricopa County Democratic Party (MCDP) lauds this bipartisan achievement. We look forward to a continued bipartisan negotiation that provides relief for this segment of our immigrant community and continues the discussion on immigration reform.

MCDP’s Latino Outreach Committee Chair, Imelda Ojeda, releases the following:

“On behalf of the Latino Outreach Committee, we celebrate and applaud the bipartisanship efforts that lead to the House of Representatives passing bills that would provide a path to citizenship to Dreamers and farmworkers. However, we also recognize that this bill is not enough. There are 11 million undocumented immigrants who need relief and undocumented young individuals who do not qualify for DACA who are left out of this bill.

We urge the US Senate to take up this legislation and take action on this critical issue. In poll after poll, Americans overwhelmingly support providing permanent legal status and a path to citizenship for unauthorized people who have made this country their home and are working hard and contributing to its prosperity and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This bill is only one part of the solution. Congress must pass legislation that improves the employment-based and family-based immigration programs and ensure asylum and humanitarian laws so there are adequate visas to meet the nation’s needs.

By rejecting the racism and discrimination that the previous administration has promoted and encouraged, this bill redirects us toward our core values: dignity, respect, diversity, and inclusion. These are the same values that Dreamers, TPS, and DED recipients share as they have been living in and contributing to our communities for years and, in some cases, decades.

We firmly reject policies that aim to disrupt the lives of individuals who call the United States their home and urge legislators to pass and enact laws that protect from deportation and a clear path to citizenship for all.”
